Greetings in Christ!

Winter has returned to the northland. With it has come the beauty of a white coating on the trees and fields of our area. This last snow brought at least 5 inches here at camp and much more for our neighbors to the south. It is really time to start thinking about spring and summer. God will bless your children, your family, or your youth group by spending time at the Island.

The 2011 Men’s Retreat was a wonderful success with over 90 men joining us. Gary Thies did an excellent job of sharing his very special ministry. The approaching storm sent many of the men off early, but the snow held off until late afternoon on Sunday. It hit South Dakota earlier and harder. Next year’s retreat will likely be on the third weekend of February. Watch for more information about that retreat and other events scheduled later this year.

Some of you may hear advertisements on AM 1100 the FLAG in the next week promoting our special Grace Lutheran School event. On Wednesday, March 2 we will have a special event for people in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Folks will be able to sign up for summer 2011 events, visit with camp staff, and see our 2011 video. Pizza will be available. We’ll be there from 5 to 7 pm.

The Polar Plunge will be held this Saturday afternoon. We expect about 60 people to take the plunge. Many will be doing so to raise funds for various charitable events and causes. Some will be doing so to benefit the Mark Moldenhauer family. We still have room for people to join us either for the entire weekend or for Saturday only.

A benefit will be held for the Mark Moldenhauer family Saturday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. Check our home page for more information.

Our Women’s Retreat will really be a very special event for women throughout the region. Jan Struck and Kim Wagner will be leading the retreat. We are gratified at how many women have already let us know that they are coming. We will be holding the event sessions in the newly remodeled chapel and Messiah Hall. Here is an update on : Last week we sent out a postcard to families around the country encouraging them to make donations on-line or through the mail. God has blessed us through at least 8 congregations that have also sent us funds that were received in a door offering on February 13 and we have heard that there are more funds coming. There have also been funds that the congregations themselves provide. We’ve already received $8,500 during the month of February.

Summer Highlight:

Sonshine Camp is intended to be a fun-filled week for people with disabilities. Our recipe for success? We take the normal camp activities and slow them down a pace or two; add in some extra time on the lake fishing and boating; throw in some swim time for those who are able; add some wonderful meals; a dash or two of Bible Study and devotions; sprinkle in a couple of bonfires; and spend an enjoyable time making new friends and enjoying God’s creation here at the Island. Come just for a day or stay for two or more days. Ages: 8 and older Dates: June 5-10, June 12-17 Rates: Day rate (9-6:30 including lunch and supper): $60 per day. Week-long rate: $325.00 Deposit: $50

Registrations continue to run well ahead of last year. We are at about 500 youth registered for this summer. Normally we are at about 150-200 at this time. We encourage you get your registrations in soon so that you won’t be disappointed.

MAWFCA – we have a training event scheduled at LIC on Sunday, February 27th for congregations that would like more information about the capital campaign or would like to begin work on their campaign. We’ll start at 2:00 and be done by 4:00.

There will be VBS workshop at camp this Sunday, February 27th. We’ll have samples of VBS materials and will cover some interesting topics. Click here for more information:

Question and Answer: Question: How much snow is there at camp? Answer: Well, it had been going down pretty quickly, but the last couple of days added about 5 inches. We probably have about 18 inches on the ground.
