Greetings in Christ!

The Island is beautiful! You’ve simply got to get out to camp and see the way God has covered the trees, coated the roofs, swathed the trails, and obscured the filth and detritus of a messy fall. Our trails are ready to go. The tubing hill is generous with its speed and comfort at the end. The broom hockey rink is as good as it gets. Our remodeled chapel provides great worship space. And, Messiah Hall is providing lots of fun for basketball and volleyball.

Our Young Scientist program in 2011 has been expanded to include an extra week in August. We just booked at least 20 youth for that new event and have had several other groups and individuals ask about joining us for the June events. We’ll be promoting those events heavily in the coming months including a trip to Duluth in April for the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators. Brian Young has been highlighting our programs and Christ Serve Ranch throughout the upper Midwest and we are starting to see the results.

We’ve had several more groups commit to Servant Events this summer. We added a 5th and 6th week (June 26-July 1 and July 17-22) and that has filled almost immediately. We’ve now added another event July 24-29. We now have about 300 youth, with another 50 or more that we are trying to get scheduled for various Servant Events this summer. In recent weeks we have been contacted by groups from Tennessee, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota South, and another group from Nebraska. In addition we will be the site for the Minnesota North District ACT Servant Event in June with what we hope will be 50 or so youth.

Brochures are being sent out to past campers in the next day or so. You’ll want to open them up right away to participate in the discounts that are available for past campers and those who sign up quickly. Later this week we’ll be sending out brochures to our larger mailing list. Brochures will be distributed to congregations through circuits again this year. We’re hoping that some of the circuit counselors will bring them back to the circuits. We’d still love to visit circuit pastors’ conferences as we are able.

Other events coming up:

Polar Plunge – Now is the time to sign up your group. We have participants already signed up from Albert Lea, Willmar, Henning, and Vergas.

Men’s Retreat – Registrations are coming in for our annual Men’s Retreat. It is an excellent program featuring Gary Thies from Mission Central. Men can now sign up online for this event.

Quilting in January is coming up this next week. We still have room, but we already have 18 registered!

Winter adventure – We are moving toward 20 signed up already and hoping for 40 or more. Sign up your group or sign up individually.

Women’s Retreat – This is another great program featuring two well-known speakers.

Groups are contacting us about servant events, retreats this spring and fall, family reunions, and many other events. If you want to schedule an event, now is the time to have us at least pencil you in.

Green sneakers – Our Green Sneakers program has started with the first shoes arriving from Trinity in Isle. This program allows you to turn in your used tennis shoes. LIC received funds for them. They are then reconditioned and sent on to third world countries where they are put to use.

I Love a Camper Appeal will take place on February 13. We will be sending out via e- mail the bulletin inserts, newsletter article and information. Funds will be used to help us bring kids to camp who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Last year we helped children whose parents had lost their jobs, several who were homeless, and lots of kids who were not a part of any organized church.

We thank God for Judy Kretzschmar and Sharon Peske. They came down on Thursday and spent a couple of days painting the ceiling and walls in Fireside. Several members of the 1970s era staff have adopted that room as well as the Birr Hall and entryway. They hope to have others join them in March for a painting bee to work on the rest of the area. If you would like to join them, let us know.

Question and Answer: Question: How do you get to serve on the board of directors? Answer: We have four different board member types. 1.) 4 pastors are selected by the district convention every three years. 2.) 4 lay people are selected by the MN North board of directors every 3 years. Each represents a region of our district. 3.) 4 lay people are selected by the Camp board every 3 years. Each represents a region of our district. 4.) three lay people to serve as members-at-large. One is selected each year for a 3 year term. Currently our board can serve up to two 3 year terms. If you are interested in serving, please let us know. Even if we don’t currently have a vacancy, there are other committees and boards that you can serve on until there might be a vacancy.
