Eritrean Health Services — $27,553 Needed
People in three rural areas of Eritrea, Africa, now have access to health care thanks to clinics operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eritrea (ELCE) with support from gracious LCMS World Relief and Human Care donors. Clinic workers educate communities to prevent diseases such as malaria and encourage mothers to vaccinate their children. The clinic staff also treat the sick, especially women and children, because they are often more vulnerable to disease and illness. Because of these efforts, ELCE President Rev. Asfaha Mehari says, "we believe that the life of the whole community has changed."
But the clinics also provide the ELCL opportunities for spiritual care. Church workers provide morning devotions for patients, some of other religious backgrounds, and lead staff and their families in Bible study. Clinic workers make a point to provide spiritual care to people living with HIV/AIDS.
